Spring is right around the corner, and that means outdoor projects are back on the to-do list. Whether you’re refreshing flower beds, leveling ground for a new fence, or adding gravel around posts, one simple step can save you time and money:
Measure before you buy.

At Straight Line Fence, we’ve seen it all—too little gravel causing project delays, or too much mulch sitting unused in the driveway. Here’s how to make sure you get it just right.
Step 1: Measure Your Space
Start by measuring the length and width of the area in feet.
- For rectangular areas:
Length × Width = Square Feet - For circular areas:
3.14 × Radius × Radius = Square Feet
Step 2: Decide on Depth
Most common project depths:
- Mulch: 2–3 inches
- Topsoil: 3–6 inches
- Gravel (for fence posts or pathways): 4–6 inches
Convert inches to feet by dividing by 12.
(Example: 3 inches ÷ 12 = 0.25 feet)
Step 3: Use the Formula
Square Feet × Depth (in feet) = Cubic Feet
To convert cubic feet to cubic yards (how most bulk materials are sold):
Cubic Feet ÷ 27 = Cubic Yards
Example
If your space is 20 feet long and 10 feet wide:
20 × 10 = 200 square feet
If you want 3 inches of mulch (0.25 feet):
200 × 0.25 = 50 cubic feet
50 ÷ 27 = 1.85 cubic yards
You’d want to order about 2 cubic yards to be safe.
Why This Matters
Ordering the right amount:
• Saves money
• Prevents delays
• Keeps your project moving
• Reduces waste
